About Me
Chuck Michelson, PhD
Hi there! My name is Chuck Michelson, and I’m an Indie Teacher based in Columbus, Ohio. Being an Indie Teacher means I’m flexible and work with students 1-on-1, often tutoring them in traditional school subjects like math, physics, statistics, and neuroscience, as well as helping professionals improve their skills. Whether it’s test prep or navigating tricky homework, I’m here to help in whatever learning situation you’re facing.
I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, raised by parents who prioritized education, and I have 28 years of tutoring experience. Two of my siblings are also teachers. I hold a PhD in neuroscience from the University of Texas, alongside degrees in physics and neuroscience from Tulane University. I've been tutoring full-time for 12 years now.
Most of my work involves tutoring students in traditional subjects, but I also specialize in guiding people through independent learning experiences. Whether you’re working through a “Dummies Guide,” preparing for an upcoming class, or want to explore something new like neuroscience, I’m here to support you every step of the way.
My tutoring produces real results. Some successful experiences my students have had: finally understanding (and enjoying!) the math they thought they hated, going into the test 100% prepared, writing an excellent paper, acing an exam, and adopting good study habits which are used for years to come. It is very enjoyable for me to see a student come in at first feeling like they'll never pass a class, and then meeting with them one last time to see the A on their final paper, project, or course grade.
I guarantee you are smarter than you think!
In my free time, I enjoy movies, camping, Argentine tango, and contributing to Wikipedia. I’m also passionate about climate change, decision-making models, and ancient civilizations.
